Stephen Nugent

I didn’t really like being a white van man. So, I spoke to a friend who worked at Royal Mail. I had an interview on the Wednesday, started on the Thursday and was out on my own walk the following Monday.

That was 20 years ago.

Since those first days as a postie, I’ve managed at pretty much every level there is: Line Manager, Delivery Office Manager, Programme Lead, Cluster Manager – you name it, I’ve done it. Now I’m Head of Delivery Performance for East of Scotland and Northern Ireland – not bad for what was supposed to be a temporary role!
It hasn’t always been a smooth ride but having the support of my colleagues has led to friendships that I’ll have for the rest of my life.

My advice? Find a good, well-respected role model and ask them to be your mentor. Meeting an amazing mentor back in 1998 really helped me decide where I wanted to go within the business. It’s probably thanks to them that I’m here.
